Pianist Aman Mahajan (Berklee School of Music) and percussionist Muthu Kumar (student of Ustad Alla Rakha and Zakir Hussain) will team up with two accomplished jazz musicians from the UK – Claire Foster (vocals) and Shanti Paul Jayasinha. The first half will feature an instrumental trio performing each other’s melodies. The second half will feature a quartet with Claire on vocals. The band will perform Claire’s own compositions and arrangements of well known jazz standards.
Clare Foster lived and worked in New York, Holland, Singapore and Canada. Now resident in England, she has been touring extensively with her Jazz Quartet and Brazilian band ‘Claridade’. Her recent release ‘Learning to Love’ features the fine playing of some of Britain’s best jazz musicians, Jason Rebello (Sting), Alec Dankworth (Dave Brubek), Winston Clifford (Carmen Lundy), Jean Toussaint (Art Blakey) and Shanti Jayasinha (Jason Yarde).
Shanti Paul Jayasinha studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He has recorded with Kenny Wheeler, Bobby Watson, Tim Garland, The Brand New Heavies, The Stereophonics and Basement Jaxx. He has played in concert with members of the Buena Vista Social Club, including Ruben Gonzales and Cachaito, also appearing with Frank Emilio Flyns Los Amigos. He has also played with Matt Bianco, supported Wayne Shorter, performed with LPO and the BBC Concert Orchestra, composed for the ABRSM jazz syllabus, and contributed transcriptions to John McGlaughlins DVD The Gateway to Rhythm. He has worked extensively with Alex Wilson, touring the UK and Europe, supporting the Afro-Cuban Allstars, the Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, and recording on 5 of Alex CDs. He is on the staff at Centre for Young Musicians in London, has been a visiting lecturer at the Guildhall and an external examiner at the Royal College of Music. He has a CD out on Candid Records, entitled Round Trip and has written a book of elementary world music trumpet tunes for Oxford University Press for their Globetrotters series.
