First impressions of Samrat vary. Be it his impossibly youthful frame, his wide palette of patented body language cues and vocal utterances, or his penchant for highly opinionated commentary on anything from racial stereotypes to the production value of 1983 era Def Leppard, he affects people in a myriad of ways. That said – and like anyone rightly convinced of their talent – he doesn’t really give a fuck what you think. But he does want you to listen carefully. Featuring vocal contributions from variety of stalwarts and mavericks in the Indian scene, ‘Dark Robot’ moves beyond his work with Teddy Boy Kill, incorporating far more subtle explorations of his sonic palette – glitched out instrumental passages, straight up party bangers (refer to the tactfully titled ‘Dicks Have Come Around’), sunrise pixelated eye anthems, and even a Satie composition. We should also note here that he spent many days as a young man looking for Eddie Van Halen in Los Angeles.

The music of Ashish Sachan confronts you with a simplicity that is both earnest, but also misleading – if you drill down there are details that only a pair of headphones (and perhaps a taste of his adopted name) can reward you with. Firmly rooted in the minimalist tradition, his narrative offers something for electronic music fans across the spectrum – committed geeks who respect musical history on one end, and on the other, those who could care less about the past and just want to lose it on a dancefloor.
