Mrittika in Bengali means Mother Earth. It takes all her elements to be in harmonious fusion, to make her beautiful. The name, thus being apt for the band not only serves as an inspiration, but is the very essence these musicians aspire to bring out, in their work-harmony. The line up has two very impressive young Hindustani vocalists, a tabla player who is also a drummer and multi percussionist, guitar, bass and keyboards, along with a modernised version of the traditional sitar, called the zitar.
With its base in Hindustani and Carnatic classical, this fusion music delves into a zone of freedom, often with subtle jazz influences. Sometimes it is foot-tapping groovy and sometimes it sways with soul-stirring ballads.
One of the principal aims of the band is to bring to forefront the various unnoticed musical styles from every nook and corner of the subcontinent. The band exhibits plenty of folk influences from the deserts of Rajasthan, to the ghats of Benaras; from the backwaters of Kerala to the paddy fields of Bengal.
