Sufi music has a universal appeal because of its inherent soulful nature and ability to resonate with people across demographic borders, religion and language. The rich poetry that focuses on the formless God and one’s experience with the Divine energy gels well with the common man. Widely understood as the ‘Bhakti’ path within Islam, Sufi poetry is stark in that it is devoid of religious traditions and ritualistic procedures.

This evening of Authentic Sufi, Soul, traditional music is presented by Smita Bellur who was has trained in Khayal music under late Shri. P. R. Bhagwat, ‘Sangeet Ratna’, late Pt. Arjunsa Nakod, late Pt. Rajabhau Sontakke, Pt. Bhalachandra Nakod and is currently getting ‘taleem’ from ‘Gaan Saraswati’, ‘Sangeet Kaumudi’ Vidushi Dr. Alka Deo Marulkar. She has travelled across the country and performed at more than 300 festivals, released 3 albums, won 3 awards for her contribution to music and runs an NGO called “Naadaanubhva” for propagating Indian Classical and Sufi/Spiritual music.

She teaches music and also writes on music in popular English dailies. Smita also works with NGOs and associates with causes as part of her social responsibility work. She has quit her successful software job in a MNC, to pursue music though she is a BE and MS by qualification.
