Whirling Kalapas is an acoustic-based trio comprising Uday Benegal (front man of Indias foremost rock band Indus Creed), Sankarshan Shanks Kini (a multi-instrumentalist and veteran session musician who has toured the world with Kailasa and currently plays with Bombay Acoustic People and Passenger Revelator) and Ashwin Andrew (a bass guitarist trained in classical piano but prefers to play drums with such acts as Passenger Revelator and Suraj Jagan).
Their music can be described variously as neo-folk, alt-country and eclectic, bluesy, acoustic pop. The bands vocally rich and instrumentally diverse sound has been garnering praise from audiences across the country.
The trio are a rich addition to Indias current indie explosion, especially for audiences looking beyond the volume-driven sounds of rock and electronic acts populating the scene. This is cerebral and fun music for the thinking listener who loves to dance.
Much loved by the BFlat audience, this is their 4th concert at the venue.
All three musicians love to sing their hearts out. Some of their most memorable performances include headlining Lou Majaws renowned Bob Dylan birthday celebrations in Shillong in 2012 as well as at Sulafest and the Ziro Festival of Music in Arunachal Pradesh in 2013.
Whirling Kalapas are about to release their debut self-titled EP, which Uday and Shanks recorded along with Indus Creed guitar player Mahesh Tinaikar.
The 4-song EP features guest performances by virtuoso percussionist Taufiq Qureshi, singers Suman Sridhar and Ankit Dayal, bassist Suresh Mendoza and drummer- percussionist Vivaan Kapoor.
