Time Capsule is CounterCultures annual trip down memory lane, paying tribute to the
legends that have inspired generations of musicians. Homegrown bands, musical
collectives & famous DJs honour their musical inspirations through reinterpreted sets
every Saturday in August.
With some 800 songs in his repertoire, James Brown has influenced contemporary artists from virtually every popular music genre rock, soul, jazz, R&B included. His polyrhythmic funk vamps virtually reshaped dance music , and his impact on hip-hop, in particular, was huge. He was also an inimitable showman, and the only thing more fun than listening to James Brown was seeing him live. A trademark feature of Brown’s stage shows, usually during the song “Please, Please, Please”, involved Brown dropping to his knees while clutching the microphone stand in his hands, prompting the show’s MC, to come out, drape a cape over Brown’s shoulders and escort him off the
stage after he had worked himself to exhaustion during his performance.
Something Relevant are an indie band that writes simple songs, and douses them
with heavy jazz, RnB and Af ro influences. At first, the band sounds like a straight up
indie rock band, but if you listen closely, you hear the band members bring their
individual influences to the table and put their unique stamp on things, much like jazz
musicians. The band refuses to play the same show twice, always improvising at gigs
and changing things around. ST R has a reputation for an electric live act and massively
unpredictable high energy shows- which is what makes them a perfect match for James
Brown!
