Moniker (Wild City DJ)
Head honcho of Indian magazine and cultural hub thewildcity.com, Moniker has a peculiar and varied taste in music.
Straddling hip-hop, garage, grime, bass, house, techno, alternative electronica and anything in between, Moniker always brings an informative set, favouring upfront and left of centre music over yesterdays tired hits.
Having been a part of the underground electronic movement in London for a number of years Moniker brings to the table a fresh and undeniably UK sound to his live shows.
The music of Hashback Hashish confronts you with a simplicity that is both earnest, but also misleading – if you drill down there are details that only a pair of headphones (and perhaps a taste of his adopted name) can reward you with.
Firmly rooted in the minimalist tradition, his narrative oers something for electronic music fans across the spectrum – committed geeks who respect musical history on one end, and on the other, those who could care less about the past and just want to lose it on a danceoor.
Since 2005, Ashish has been perfecting his craft, both as a producer, and a performer; eight years in, his musical vision can be heard from SXSW, to Delhi, and everywhere in between; working with producers as diverse as Da Fresh to fellow Delhi electronica alumnus Audio Pervert. His 2012 debut album ‘The Grinning, Naked Bunch’ is a must listen to if one wants to get a sense of what is going on in India right now, masterfully merging local motifs with relentless programming sophistication.
Yidam is Varun’s projection of electronic ambient and chillout music. Manipulating and producing sounds since the mid-90s, Varun’s habit of digging for eclectic music and playing for spaces resulted in focusing on downtempo electronica and performing at alternative stages and unconventional venues. Gigging in the States resulted in the formation of ChillUmafia DJ collective with Damon & Robyo in 2005. The subsequent years were spent managing a record label (DBR), experimenting with sound-healing & organising events in NYC and Chicago.
After performing at Burning Man in 2008, Varun moved back to Kolkata to start a net-label (liquidfrequency.com), an event company (littlei.in) and set up a production studio. Since 2009 his DJ sets and tracks have been heard in India, Nepal, Poland, Switzerland, Germany and Portugal. A background in electronics has also resulted in the use of analog synths, digital controllers and interactive video as part of collaboration projects with jazz musicians and live electronic acts.
Teddy Boy Kill is a self confessed technologic “beat punk” consisting of Ashhar Farooqui, Samrat Bee, and recently added drummer Akshat Nauriyal. Otherwise known as Toymob, Audio Pervert and Tahska.
Forget everything you know about Indian electronica. “Rising out of the usual clutter and clam of electronic music in India”, Teddy Boy Kill has forced itself to develop an edgy, moody and distinctly solid sound. An electronic-based rock/techno/electro band from New Delhi, Teddy Boy Kill make a mark with their raucous live shows and high-energy music that draws comparisons to !!!, LCD Soundsystem, Justice, Walls and even Massive Attack at times. Yup, I said it. Tonight, bandmember Audio Pervert will do, well, whatever the f*** he wants. Get real.
