FROGTURNS3 ft. Nikhil Chinapa and Theo Kottis at Blue Frog, Pune

Blue FROG Pune completes a journey of 3 years!

Nikhil Chinapa
To say that Nikhil Chinapa has donned many an avatar during his career, is like saying it snows in Alaska; a bit of an understatement. He morphs from DJ to VJ to MC to Music Promoter to Festival Director —some of his best known avatars — with amazing fluidity.
He studied Architecture and graduated with a Thesis in Hospital Design. A year later and for reasons that scientists are still trying to understand, Nikhil joined MTV. He said, “I think it’ll be fun.” For once, he was right. At MTV, Nikhil has hosted almost every show the channel has aired. From MTV Select – MTV’s longest running show, (it aired continuously for 10 years) to being the host of Splitsvilla, a judge on Roadies as well as Rock On and now host of MTV Mashups. Nikhil’s Mom still thinks he’s an idiot though and should get a real job. As a popular VJ, Nikhil got to spend a lot of time around his first love, music. In 2001, a conversation between friends resulted in the launch of Submerge — India’s first, and now largest Indian Electronic Dance Music (EDM) company in India.By now, Nikhil had begun to DJ professionally and plays, well… whatever he feels like. His sets are moody, varied, often erratic but usually fun. Most of his sets feature frantic foot-stomping and the random flailing of arms – sometimes by him. They also feature music – the kind that has a repetitive monotonous beat and is best enjoyed at dangerous decibel levels.
Nikhil was also the co-founder of Sunburn. He is now the Festival Curator and partner of Vh1 Supersonic, Goa’s brand new beach music festival.

Theo Kottis –
Summer 16 is shaping up nicely for Theo Kottis; with upcoming EP releases on Anjunadeep, Moda Black, and Sasha’s Last Night On Earth, plus a slew of festival dates scheduled – he is certainly living up to the hype, created by none other than Pete Tong. Coming from humble beginnings, he has learnt his craft amongst legends at renowned venues, including as a resident at Glasgow’s Sub Club. Having DJ’d alongside Jamie Jones, Tale Of Us, Seth Troxler and David August and being able to count the likes of Pete Tong, Solomun and Simian Mobile Disco as fans, Theo has established himself as one of the UK’s most exciting emerging talents.
Gradually gaining the recognition he deserves from the likes of Solomun, Skream, Adam Beyer and Pete Tong, 2014 saw Theo Kottis make an exciting entrance onto the scene, with his EP Waiting Game storming the Beatport Electronica top 10.
Based in Edinburgh, Kottis, who’s a key cohort for dance music collective, Moda Black, not only dropped his debut EP, Waiting Game, on the Jaymo & Andy George he..
Sometimes dark, sometimes uplifting, always emotive; Theo is truly obsessive about his approach to music. As a DJ he’s already performed at Rockness, T In The Park, Hideout and Glasgow’s legendary Sub Club, and that’s purely down to his talents in the booth. Now, with a blossoming production career, Theo has found a whole new way to convey his passion for music and convert his wide range of influences and experiences into substantive club compositions.

Bok Bok, DJ Mocity, Lacuna at Auro Kitchen & Bar, Delhi

Bok Bok

Bok Bok aka Alex Sushon is a London based DJ, producer and director of the incendiary Night Slugs record label. DJing since 2004, Sushon started to make his name on London’s underground scene around the time Grime music was first emerging from the capitol’s tower blocks. The unique inventiveness and raw energy of that music has remained with Sushon ever since those early days, as he discovered the wider world of club music, seeing many parallels between the homegrown music of London and House music from Chicago to South Africa, Techno, Baltimore/Jersey/Philly Club, 80s funk and a myriad of other music styles across many eras.

This pan-genre, time-irreverent mentality was the foundation of the Night Slugs movement. In 2008 Sushon would join forces with like-minded producer and DJ L-Vis 1990 to form Night Slugs (NS), initially a club night in South London. From day 1 the ethos was fiercely open-minded and DIY, as Bok and L-Vis dedicated themselves to club music. Through the events series and their DJ sets around the UK and Europe, the duo cultivated a unique sound, cross-pollinating ideas from their various influences until a distinct community of producers crystallised around them. In 2010 Night Slugs re-launched as a record label. Since then NS has been a non-stop source of ambitious, cutting-edge music for the club, launching the careers of artists such as Mosca, Jam City and Girl Unit and providing a context-rich platform for like-minded producers such as Kingdom, Egyptrixx and Lil Silva. The label’s sound may be diverse but it’s FEEL is distinctive, injecting the crews diverse influences back into the UK soundsystem heritage that inspired Sushon way back in his early days as a Grime DJ and FWD>> raver.

In the process, Night Slugs has become a truly cult label, with a reputation for quality and innovation rivalled by few others and with a fan base as globally spread as Bok and L-Vis’ inspirations. In May 2011, Bok Bok released the ‘Southside’ EP on Nightslugs. The EP featured 5 instrumental tracks, including the break out club track ‘Silo Pass’ and in October 2013 his productions featured on the mixtape ‘Cut 4 Me’ released by sister LA label Fade To Mind with vocalist Kelela. Bok Bok collaborated with Dutch producer Tom Trago on the Night Voyage Tool Kit EP released by Sound Pellegrino in 2011 and more recently the duo have founded the label Night Voyage to put out their collaborations. ‘Get Me Want You Want’ was released in Dec 2013 and the latest instalment ‘Pussy Track / Silent G Safari’ was released in January 2014. In May 2014 Bok Bok released his first solo material in 3 years in the form of the ‘Your Charizmatic Self’ EP. The lead single ‘Melba’s Call’ featured Kelela and a ground breaking video born out of Night Slugs unique aesthetic. He has toured extensively in the US, Australia, Asia and Europe – this year celebrating Night Slugs’ 6th Birthday with events in London, Paris, New York, Barcelona, LA and Tokyo.

DJ MoCity

Born in Baghdad, raised in New Delhi, and now based in Dubai, Mohammed Uraibi Abood (aka DJ MoCity) is a music entrepreneur and DJ with a passion for authentic music from all around the world. Since his early days as a hip-hop loving teenager in New Delhi, Mohammed has grown into a highly experienced and respected musical tastemaker whose personal choices and interests have illuminated the way for thousands more to follow. His dedication to his vision and unmatched effort towards realising it have made him a key figure in the development of the independent music scene in India and Dubai.

Mohammed has achieved a remarkable amount in the last few years. In 2009, he founded and self-managed Reggae Rajahs (India’s first reggae sound system) into national prominence. He
then expanded into events by creating and running a successful series of club nights such as Delitronica, The Future and Imported Goods, which set the benchmark for club events in India at the time. He was then invited to create and curate stages for major festivals in 2012, such as NH7 Weekender (20,000 attendees) and Sunburn Festival (50,000 attendees). Upon moving to Dubai in 2014, Mohammed established ‘Motellacast’, a podcast that features forward-thinking music that was created due to a lack of alternative music on the local radio. His efforts as a radio host were validated when he was invited for a guest spot on NTS-Radio London. He then co-founded ‘The 264 Cru’ a record label and diverse collective of DJs, artists and creative individuals whose shared goal is to help Dubai’s nascent art and music scene find it’s footing.

Since 2015, he has also been a booking agent for Dubai-based OHM Events. Over the last year, OHM Events has hosted artists such as Deadalus, Jordan Rakai and Fatima & The Eglo Band, and they take great pride in being part of the change that Dubai’s music scene needs.

Mohammed’s musical identity is derived from his own personal heritage and multicultural experiences living all around the world. While proudly Iraqi by heritage, he has been unable to engage in any music-related activities in his home country due to its volatile political situation.

Rather than see this as a disadvantage, Mohammed has chosen to see this as an opportunity to truly be a citizen of the world.

An Xmas Affair ft. DJ Clement at Church Street Social, Bangalore

Music in the mid nineties was changing spheres and while the rest of the world was trying to understand the dynamism it was taking on, ALL ONE MAN WANTED TO DO WAS LISTEN TO A RECORD! And that’s exactly what he did! Music, a simple escape, soon became a passion and then, Clement D’souza’s reality. Even though he was new to turn tables he was already getting set for the catapult his professional life was about to take.

Come 1995, the course of his life was set not in stone but in the waves and vibrations that make people groove. To be able to watch people dance is to hear their hearts speak out unabashed. And that’s what keeps Clement on the console creating new sounds and turning new tunes that keep people hankering on. This is why Clement became a Disc Jockey! And in an industry where cutting edge is actually more cutting than edge, he puts a unique and positive spin on every party, gig or event that he plays at.

An Xmas Affair ft. Vachan Chinnappa at Koramangala Social, Bangalore

Vachan Chinnappa

“Playing a collection of tapes at small venues in a small-town doesn’t sound like a career plan, but that was how my musical career first began, then morphed into a full-time profession and became my raison d’etre, so to speak.”

Vachan has been instrumental in nurturing the Drum and Bass scene in Bangalore. With a sustained effort and persevering spirit, Vachan has literally helped DnB “arrive” in Bangalore at Bacchus (F&B) from 2008 to 2011. Every Wednesday night, DnB lovers from across the city gathered at Bacchus to get a healthy dose of the music they love, spun by an unmatched DnB selector. His repertoire is massive and the energy he creates on the dancefloor is certainly unparalleled. And continues to do the same now at PEBBLE every thrusday Vachan’s DnB sets have been very successful in Mumbai, Chennai and New Delhi.
In addition to this his latest venture has been RESPECT THE FUNK With a distinct pulse on the city’s demand for all that is alternate musically, Vachan chinnappa next venture is all set to take one back to the world of Funk Music. Originated in the late 60’s Funk music is a blend of melody and harmony that will bring the era of tuxedo and poodle skirts back to the dance floor. YET another 1st – country’s first dedicated ‘Funk Night’ was organized every Saturday at 380 Down and then at LOFT 38 , popular night spots at at Indira Nagar in Bangalore. A genre of music that lost much of its sheen to trance and rock is revived once again by Vachan chinnappa. While most of the parties or DJ nights are predominantly Bollywood, Jazz and Rock in India, Funk Nights is aimed at creating a niche for the music in Bangalore.
